A shortsighted world that we live in
HEALTH & MEDICINE
While it is true that mankind is generally guilty of thinking only of the short term (for example, think economic development versus climate change), this article is intended to focus on the literal interpretation of the title i.e. the problem of nearsightedness (myopia).
By 2050, it is estimated that 5 billion people would be myopic. That is a staggering number and a cause for concern. Popular Science magazine published an article on this topic in 2016. This article in turn relied on a review study that was published in the 'Opthalmology' journal. What is worrying is that this study highlights that myopia will be a leading cause of vision loss by 2050. Let us take steps now to prevent a degradation in what is arguably the most important of all the five senses.
