Graham Kenny's article in the Harvard Business Review states that very often what pass off as 'two-three day workshops for business strategy formulation' end up delivering a list of action items that are perhaps neither 'strategic' in nature, nor 'planned' as well. He attributes this to the tendency of not taking a holistic view of the business and its environs as well as the need for taking a position on strategic factors that are relevant to the key stakeholder groups.

A must read, this article highlights the typical pitfalls of such workshops and the required safeguards.
