Capitalism versus a welfare state

The COVID 19 pandemic has forced the world order to rethink how it combats it, for it has been proved that no one is safe until everyone is safe. Such a rethink has now also extended to the topic of whether the vaccine designers / producers need to sacrifice a shot at super profits at the altar of societal welfare by sharing their technology with manufacturers world wide, in the hopes that the vaccine becomes universally accessible.
A link to a recent news article (given below) elaborates on this point. In my humble opinion, just like in everything else, a balance needs to be achieved. Too much of emphasis on IP protection coupled with super profits will exacerbate the accusations of profiting on others' misery while too much of an emphasis on making the vaccines affordable to the peril of its designers and manufacturers will simply put a lid on further Research and Innovation.
