Corporations and government regulations

It is a very often repeated mantra these days that 'the Government has no business in running a business'. While this is largely true, it is equally important that the government regulates in a manner that provides a level playing field to all businesses and protects the investors, consumers and the society at large from business corporations running amok after their own vested interests.
This is a prelude to a fantastic article in the Guardian that seeks to explain how the British Raj in India was actually a manifestation of the East India Company pursuing its corporate interests at all/any costs.
