For all the brouhaha over 'Aadhaar' (the Indian Government's scheme to use citizen's biometrics for authentication before they avail certain government services), the recent article in MIT Technology review magazine shows that even the French government is now following suit. The plans are to incorporate facial recognition technology into a mandatory digital identity for its citizens to ensure that authenticated individuals can access government services / benefits (subsidies etc.).

What this shows is that no matter what this kind of technology is here to stay. Instead of fighting it, we should collectively figure out the optimal way of managing its benefits vis-a-vis the data privacy / digital identity risks.
