Living root bridges
ARTS & CULTURE
Perched in the north-east corner of India, lies the province of 'Meghalaya'. Its name literally means 'abode of the clouds' in Sanskrit language. A specialty of this province is the indigenous art / technology developed by the people of Khasi tribe in building bridges made of living tree roots over streams and rivulets.
Given below is a link to an article appearing in the National Geographic magazine that contains some stunningly beautiful pictures of these bridges. You have to visit this place to believe it! I was fortunate enough to travel there a couple of years back. May the knowledge, tradition, existence & maintenance of such bridges and their legend continue for generations to come!
