It was all along thought that a plane without moving parts would not be practical on account of lack of required thrust. Well, MIT researchers have recently successfully flown such a plane, albeit an experimental one that weighs 2.45 kilograms and propels approximately 60 metres. Quoting from the article (link to which is given below), "If the technology could be scaled up, it would produce future aircraft that are far safer, quieter, and easier to maintain. Most important, it would eliminate combustion emissions, since the process is powered entirely by battery."
